Understanding and mastering these six areas of an eBay auction are absolutely essential to maximize the success and profitability of your auctions.
Now, you might ask, why can’t we just tell you how to do eBay auctions? All of this research seems like a lot of work and shouldn't there just be a standard method no matter what is being sold? Those are fair questions. It is kind of like the question: “how do you know if a restaurant is good?” Bottom line: you like the food. But does everyone like the same food? No.
A buddy of mine likes to go to a certain Chinese food restaurant. Now, I like Chinese food a lot, but this restaurant my buddy likes to eat at makes me wonder if they're really serving Chinese food. What works for my buddy, doesn't necessarily work for me, and eBay auctions have to be seen in the same light.
The point is different things appeal to different people. If you research high tech items on eBay you will get a very different presentation from researching tie-dyed t-shirts as the market they are trying to reach is different. (If you do not believe me check these out as good examples.) The same is going to be true for power tools, cars, women’s apparel, children’s toys and so forth. There will be some thing in common with all the auctions and that is what we will discuss in this lesson and future lessons.
By researching auctions specific to your item you will get understanding and insight how best to present and sell that item on eBay to the people who buy that kind of item.
- Items on auction now
- Completed items found by looking at members’ histories (feedback)
- Completed items found through the Site Map. The link is labeled Completed Listings.
Now is the time to research the items you have collected to put on eBay by finding what others are doing or have done on eBay with these similar items.
There are several reasons you should research items auctioned on eBay. Look at other auctions! There are people who are very experienced and skilled at making money on eBay and whom you can learn from. From these people you can learn how to:
- Write a headline with keywords that will be found by the bidders
- Write sales copy (this will be discussed in further detail later) that is warm, friendly and compelling.
- The kind, quality and number of pictures you should display on your auction.
- The kinds of auction presentations that communicates professionalism and credibility to the bidders who come to your auction.
- How to direct the winner of your auction to pay for the item.
- How to deal with the shipping and handling of the item.
